Fourth Dry Stone Walling Course – 23 August 2025
Participants arrived with different reasons for learning dry stone walling – from future garden projects to simply experiencing traditional stonework first-hand. What connected them was learning how irregular natural stone begins to make sense once you work with it yourself.
On Saturday, 23 August 2025, we held our fourth dry stone walling course in Novosedly, South Moravia, Czech Republic. This time we had a smaller, focused group and another section of dry stone wall gradually took shape as participants worked through the basic principles of traditional stone construction.
The aim was not simply to finish a wall. Participants learned to look at individual stones differently, understand why their shape matters and see how each piece contributes to the stability and appearance of the complete structure.
Everyone Arrives with a Different Goal
One of the interesting things about our courses is that people rarely arrive for exactly the same reason. Someone may have a garden and want to build a retaining wall or a smaller garden wall. Another person may be preparing to renovate an old building, while someone else simply wants to spend a day doing practical physical work with natural stone.
Each participant therefore takes something slightly different away from the course. What they share is the experience of discovering that natural stone has its own logic. That becomes much easier to understand once you begin selecting, turning and placing the stones with your own hands.
Learning by Building with Stone
The basic principles remain similar from one course to another: preparing the base, establishing the first course, selecting suitable stones, using wedges where necessary and gradually developing the structure of the wall.
But the finished result is never exactly the same. Depending on the work taking place during a particular course, participants may build a straight visible wall, a smaller garden feature or part of a retaining structure.
Because natural stone is irregular, no two sections develop in precisely the same way. Participants have to respond to the material in front of them instead of simply repeating an identical construction unit.
A Course That Brings Different People Together
Craftspeople, gardeners, architects and complete beginners can all approach stonework from different perspectives. What matters most at the beginning is not previous experience but a willingness to understand how the material behaves.
A dry stone wall is more than a collection of stones stacked without mortar. Stability comes from selecting suitable pieces, placing them correctly and understanding how the individual stones work together as one structure.
That is why practical experience is so useful. Once you begin handling the material yourself, concepts such as stone selection, bonding and stability become much easier to understand.
